State Rep. Judd Matheny Blasts Metro Nashville Council Over Proposed ‘Sanctuary City’ Ordinances

Tennessee Star

State Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma) tore into the Metro Nashville Council’s proposed sanctuary city ordinances on the Dan Mandis Show on 99.7 FM WWTN Tuesday.

As The Tennessee Star reported on Tuesday, the Metro Nashville Council is currently considering two ordinances that would, in effect, turn Nashville into a sanctuary city.

“It’s the most egregious move against public safety that the city of Nashville could possibly expose its citizens, and emergency services and social work to,” Matheny said.

“It’s completely antithetical to the United States Constitution, and America. And the city of Nashville – with all due respect – they need to remember that the City operates at the pleasure of the State,” Matheny added:

If they move forward with this – which I hope the’ll have the sense about them to not have a second reading (much less a third) and try to pass it – they can expect swift and severe action be the State of Tennessee. The taxpayers of Davidson county will suffer incomprehensibly if this passes.

Organized crime will come to this town like a magnet from all over the country.

The police will be a great risk. The citizens will be at great risk.

You’ll see social services absolutely explode and not be able to keep up with the need.

Then, Matheny lowered the boom on Metro Nashville Council.

“Plus, I’m telling you, the General Assembly in Tennessee will cut off funding to Davidson County if they pursue this,” Matheny stated.

Host Dan Mandis questioned Rep. Matheny about the specific provision of the bill that prohibited city workers – including law enforcement – to ask an individual’s immigration status, and how that would effect Nashville, and Tennessee’s entitlement and welfare resources.

Representative Matheny responded, “Nashville is becoming a serious problem for the State of Tennessee, and the General Assembly is recognizing it.”

“We’re trying to give Nashville and its elected officials the ability to correct this problem themselves without the State stepping in, but make no mistake: a City and a County are incorporated entities through the State of Tennessee and we have the ability to go so far as to dissolve boundaries and dissolve budgets of State monies,” Matheny said.

“You will see swift and severe action next year from the General Assembly if Nashville continues with this,” Matheny promised, adding:

With all due respect, the councilmen that are proposing this and those that are supporting it are putting citizens of Nashville at great risk – not only financially but also personally.

There are severe sex trafficing and drug rings that will come to Nashville because they know they will have lieniency with the court systems. They know they will have the freedom to move around not just underground but above ground, so the speak. It is very detrimental not only to Nashville, but to the entire state.

The border counties around Nashville will see just as many problems coming in. It’s just an ill-thought-out idea and it’s and extraordinarily poor way to govern.

Listen to the audio (Rep. Matheny’s remarks about the Tennessee General Assembly’s response to any “sanctuary city” ordinances from the Metro Nashville Council begin at the 1:44 mark.)

Matheny told The Star last week he is “100 percent in the race for Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District,” in the event Rep. Diane Black opts to run for governor instead of seeking re-election.

Scottie Nell Hughes, who is also considering a run for the Sixth Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Diane Black if Black runs for governor, tells The Star she is cheering Matheny on.

“I really hope Representative Matheny, who is an extremely invaluable voice in our State Legislature, pushes a Bill to withhold State funding from Nashville because of the Metro Nashville Council’s vote to violate Federal law and risk the safety and security of those legal residents who live and visit Music City,” Hughes says.

  1. The members who are voting for this are lying to the public saying it will NOT turn Nashville into a sanctuary city, and then they go straight on citing the very documentation that says it WILL do exactly that! Morons!! (Or — they think we’re all morons?!?)

This is the most insane proposal leaders of a city could ever make. To endanger the citizens of a city in your care is egregious and shows how far the Socialists will go to gain power over the Representative Republic.

Any veteran of any war or conflict should remember these words “I will obey the orders of the President of the United States ” Where is the sanctuary for the homeless vets. Where is their recompense??

FOLKS THIS IS HUGE. IT IS DISGRACEFUL. GOD BLESS MATHENY. THIS MUST BE STOPPED. WE HAVE A LIBERAL BUNCH OF PEOPLE IN THE COUNCIL AND IT TELLS US THEY NEED TO BE VOTED OUT. THIS ALSO MEANS CONSERVATIVE YOUNG REPUBLICANS NEED TO TAKE THEM ON IN THE NEXT ELECTION. BETWEEN THE MAYOR AND THE COUNCIL, NASHVILLE IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE DETROIT.
THANK YOU TENNESSEE STAR FOR GIVING US “REAL” NEWS.

Thank you Mr Matheny for being the voice of sanity among the (sad to say) insane cacophony! What mayhem this will bring to TN.

I will give very grave consideration to NEVER paying another penny in Metro taxes if Nashville becomes a sanctuary city. If Nashville becomes a sanctuary city I will NEVER be arrested for anything without screaming my head off to the press because if illegal immigrants are granted total amnesty and a city is granted total amnesty I WILL NEVER GO TO JAIL FOR ANYTHING in this town. The mayor is trying to make me (us) prisoners of a city that is virtually seceding from the State/Union by its criminal intent. Megan Barry should be impeached for even entertaining such an idea.

Dear Legislature: you have done NOTHING about this phony for-profit “refugee” scam but you CAN and SHOULD step in right now to prevent Nashville from finalizing this. At the same time, we who live here need to be wearing out the phones in the council offices today voicing our extreme displeasure

It will take one death, ONE death, of a citizen that was murdered by an illegal alien to blow this whole racket sky high.

We would not hear about it. You hear any of this opposition on Channel 4?

The liberal insanity has finally hit Nashville. Time to put a stop to the “we don’t give a hell about laws” attitude of Nashville council members and the Mayor of Nashville. If you think your little Sanctuary city ordinance stops at the Nashville border you are insane. This would affect the whole state and basically invite every criminal illegal/plus illegal to Nashville AND the surrounding areas. Not sure who you think you are playing with our lives, but we are done with your bs. If your goal is to overwhelm the state, there will be a very loud and visible opposition to your liberal elitist policies.

Nashville will become the “nest” that breeds the criminals but all of Tennessee will be the prey for these criminals.
